Who, When and Why was introduced?
Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin was disturbed that an issue as important as our environment was not addressed in politics or by the media, so he created the first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970. An estimated 20 million people nationwide attended festivities that day.

Earth Day has been celebrated every April 22nd since 1970. The main aim of Earth Day is to raise awareness on the negative impact our actions as mankind have on our environment and earth as a whole, and is a day for political action and civic participation.
How can we celebrate?
Here are a few things you can do to do your part for saving the planet on Earth Day.
- Go on a beach clean.
- Plant a tree.
- Buy a bag for life.
- Don’t eat any meat.
- Go microbead-free.
- Walk or ride a bike.
- Give up chewing gum.
- Shop at a local farmers market.

- Earth Day was created through the tireless efforts of Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson.
- John F. Kennedy played a role in early efforts to promote environmental conservation.
- Although it began as an American movement, Earth Day is now an international phenomenon and internationally, it’s known as International Mother Earth Day.
- In 2009, NASA planted a historic “moon tree” to celebrate Earth Day.

Earth day is a day for all of us to remember the environment in our busy lives. A day that reminds us to continue to do the little things that help our environment. Things like turning off the lights, the conservation of energy, plant trees, recycle, reduce, and reuse.”
